Interview with an Experienced Preceptor

Overview

Our target audience, Nurse Practitioners preceptors, teaches graduating Nurse Practitioner (NP) students hands-on skills in clinical settings. But what makes a good preceptor? Dr. Jo Ann Serota DNP, CPNP, FAANP, IBCLC is an NP with a wealth of knowledge and experience as a preceptor. Therefore, we recorded an interview in which she gives valuable insight into what makes a good preceptor.

Production
Dr. Hallas, the Principle Investigator (PI) of the HRSA Grant, developed a series of questions to ask Dr. Serota that address important areas of precepting. Our goal was to record a relatively brief but substantive interview, so we sent Dr. Serota our questions ahead of time and she provided us with written responses for us to review. By doing so, we could identify parts of her answers that either required elaboration or that could be omitted. Next, we practiced the interview over the phone so that we could time her answers to further review whether any info could be expounded upon or omitted. Finally, we hired a videographer and recorded the interview in her office in Philadelphia, PA.

Each question was recorded in a separate video which I strung together in iMovie.
