Overview
I collaborated with Dr. Babette Babatte Biesecker at NYU Meyers to develop this eLearning course. The objective is to provide Nurse Practitioners (NPs) with an overview of Social Determinants of Health (SDOH) and demonstrate how to assess and address causes of SDOH when caring for patients. The Challenge
Given the abundance of potential areas of SDOH to cover in the course, I worked with Dr. Biesecker to distill information into 7 sub-modules that focus on information and resources that Nurse Practitioners can use in their day-to-day practice. Therefore, we focused on actionable ways in which practitioners can use this knowledge to improve care of their patient populations. For instance, since our target audience is Pediatric Nurse Practitioners, we developed the Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) sub-module to educate NPs on the effects of ACEs and provide resources and tools for screening their patients for ACEs. Content
The course begins with a pre-test and ends with a post-test to measure learner improvement. Each sub-module is narrated by Dr. Biesecker, an expert in SDOH, who guides learners through the content. Knowledge Checks are embedded into each sub-module so that learners can evaluate their comprehension of the material |
Learning Outcomes
- Identify how social determinants of health impact population health in the United States
- Identify how social determinants of health impact population health in New York City
- Understand the concept of intersectionality to help us further understand upstream causes of health disparities
- Identify how adverse experiences during childhood affect population health
- Apply strategies for assessing social determinants of health
- Create intervention strategies for acting upon social determinants of health
Development and Delivery
I built each sub-module in Adobe Captivate and published files in HTML5 to the PC-NP-PDP website, as SCORM files to faculty members' NYU Classes courses, and as a Continuing Education Program on the National Association of Nurse Practitioners (NAPNAP) website.
